Make and Design
We considered the build, durability, stabilization, and waterproof capacity of each of these action cameras to certify that they’re adventure-ready.

Battery Life
We considered the battery life per unit, because even if the action cameras take great shots, it’d be useless if they die out when you need them!

Pros
- Uses Hypersmooth 5.0 stabilization
- Excellent battery life with Enduro
- 27-megapixel chip
- Waterproof
Cons
- Night mode isn’t great
- Steep price
It would be impossible to have any kind of discourse on what the best action camera brand is without mentioning GoPro.
This brand has been at it since 2004, creating the world’s most versatile cameras. We’re happy to have reviewed its latest release, hot off the press: the GoPro Hero 11 Black!
The Hero 11 has a larger sensor, is waterproof up to 33 feet, and uses HyperSmooth 5.0, amazingly smooth, pro-level cinematic stabilization (GoPro’s not pulling your leg here, they actually won an Emmy for this!).
What we love about the Hero 11 is its whole new 8:7 aspect ratio, which definitely had content creators in mind. It’s almost square, making cross-platform video posting much more seamless.
It also has HyperView mode. Here, an image captured in 8:7 can be compressed into a 16:9 aspect ratio frame, giving it an ultra-wide effect.
We didn’t have to worry about the quality of our shots because of the 27-megapixel chip.
With the Hero 11, you can shoot for up to 60 minutes on 5.3K resolution at 60 frames per second. The new Enduro battery life is terrific, as it can go up to 120 minutes of recording time at 1080p at 30 fps.
The downside to the GoPro Hero 11 Black is that its night mode isn’t too great. The shots made under low light setting is far from the vibrance of its daytime shots.
Also, being a premium model, the latest GoPro sells for a steep price.

Pros
- Premium action camera for a cheaper price
- Impressive 5K video
- Waterproof
- Compatible with latest GoPro accessories
Cons
- Battery life falls short compared to newer models
- Rear touchscreen may be unresponsive at times
Once top-of-the-line, now one of the better entry-level GoPros you can get at a decent price.
The GoPro Hero 9 will prove handy if you’re planning to use it for vlogging. It’s got a large, front-facing LCD, perfect for framing yourself before you start recording!
Overall this model is easy and intuitive to use, with a status light on both sides of the camera and the shutter button on top.
It uses HyperSmooth 3.0 stabilization to ensure all your outtakes aren’t shaky, using in-camera horizon leveling.
In terms of the quality of visuals, you definitely won’t be disappointed with its 20-megapixel camera that can record videos at 30 fps in 5.3K or 60 fps in 4K high resolution.
The Hero 9 is also waterproof to up to 10 meters, and can shoot up to 90 minutes at 5K resolution at 30 fps with its lithium-ion battery.
Good news is that though it’s an older model, it’s still compatible with all the latest GoPro accessories from the Enduro battery to external microphone Mods.
What we didn’t like about the GoPro Hero 9 is that its rear touchscreen is at times unresponsive, and that its battery life falls short in comparison to other GoPros in its range.

Video Quality | 4/5 |
Battery Life | 5/5 |
Pros
- 360 action camera with many impressive features
- Uses HyperSmooth stabilization
- High quality microphone
Cons
- Limited single lens capture
- Almost as expensive as top-of-the-line models
If your heart is set on buying a 360-degree action camera, you’ll get everything you hoped for with the GoPro Max.
It’s a versatile camera that can operate on single lens mode or dual lens 360 mode, where you can record footage in every direction.
The GoPro Max comes in a sturdy build, is matte grey in color, and waterproof to up to 16 feet. It has a front-facing display, which is perfect for taking selfie shots or positioning yourself in the frame for shooting.
The Max has touch screen functions which make it easy to navigate and operate. It has a Max HyperSmooth stabilization feature, ideal for shake-free trick and action shot coverage.
It also has a 2x slow motion setting also if you’re looking for that cinematic effect for your videos.
The 360-degree videos are stitched automatically in-camera, so you won’t need to edit it just to stitch it together.
The GoPro Max has an impressive 18 megapixel camera, where you can use any of its four digital lenses: narrow linear wide and max superview. You can choose your preferred aspect ratio for shooting among 16:9, 4:3, 9:16, or 1:1.
It has a great battery life that can accommodate 115 minutes of shooting in full HD.
We also love how terrific the audio is with its six built-in microphones.
You won’t need to carry an external microphone to record sound.
For post-processing, you can use the GoPro app on your phone or use the desktop version to reframe your footage, or capture it from a different angle.
What the GoPro Max doesn’t have is a 4K shooting mode for its single camera. It’s also almost as expensive as the Hero 11 Black, which is the top-of-the-line model of the GoPro brand, so be discerning for which specifications you’re looking for.

Video Quality | 4/5 |
Battery Life | 5/5 |
Pros
- Great quality of still photos and videos
- Has a front-facing camera
- Terrific battery life
- Clear audio
Cons
- Limited to 4K resolution
- Sand may get stuck to magnetic clip
DJI is popular for their drones, but their line of action cameras perform just as well and are designed for all sorts of adventure.
The Osmo Action 3 is built to last, being drop-proof for up to 5 feet and being able to withstand conditions 16 meters underwater.
It has a very solid, compact build, and just like the GoPro it can fit in the palm of your hand.
The Action 3 has a front-facing camera, with a wide lens that can capture in ultra-wide HD. It can shoot in 4K resolution at 120 fps.
One of the best things about the Osmo Action 3 is that its front LCD screen is also touch-sensitive, which makes it perfect for vlogging! You can easily adjust to your desired settings before taking a selfie video.
What we love about the DJI Osmo Action 3 is aside from great quality photos and videos, it has really crisp and clear audio!
That coupled with its excellent 160 minute battery life makes it all the more tempting to create short films on this camera. It also doesn’t overheat on continuous recording, even on 4K at 60 fps.
A word of caution: while its magnetic locking system is super handy, metallic particles in sand may cling onto its magnetic lock! Best to be wary of this detail when you bring your Osmo Action 3 to the beach.
The only downside to the Osmo Action 3 is that you might feel limited by its max recording resolution at 4K. If that part doesn’t irk you so much, we think it’s still definitely worth the purchase.

Pros
- Significantly cheaper than most action cameras
- 360-degree camera
- High-resolution photos and videos
- Has time-lapse
Cons
- Stabilization could be better
- Water-resistant only, not waterproof
Xiaomi technology has turned itself into a household name for personal gadgets and techie home appliances.
If you’re already part of the Xiaomi ecosystem and wish to level up documentation of your outdoor adventures, don’t hesitate to get the Xiaomi Mi Sphere Camera kit!
It’s a lightweight 360-degree action camera, comparable to the GoPro Max at just a fraction of its price. It comes with a handheld tripod and protective case.
To set up the Mi Sphere, you can use the Mi Sphere app on your phone to connect to the camera over Wifi.
It captures everything from left to right and top to bottom at an incredible 7K high resolution for photos.
What we love about the Mi Sphere is that it’s great for shooting time-lapses. It also works great in low-light, which is terrific for an action camera of its price point.
The only downside to the Mi Sphere is its image and video stabilization, which could use some work. It’s fine on a regular basis but taking it on a rocky mountain bike trail might just disappoint you.
It’s also only water-resistant and not waterproof, so don’t plan on using it for a scuba diving video either!
